Contrary to gold-plated jewelry, our gold-filled and gold vermeil pieces have a much thicker plating of gold, making them hard to tarnish and safe for sensitive skin.
Our materials
All of our jewelry is made from gold fill, gold vermeil, sterling silver, and solid gold that won't tarnish or turn your skin green. From the beginning of launching Midori, we wanted create high-quality and affordable jewelry for our customers.
Using demi-fine materials such as gold vermeil and gold fill allows us to bring beautiful and affordable jewelry to you that is tarnish-resistant, waterproof, and safe for sensitive skin.
We outlined each material we use in our jewelry below and how to care for it.
Metal Comparison
Gold Filled
Gold-filled jewelry is created through a heating process by bonding a thick layer of gold onto a base metal, usually brass or copper. Gold fill contains 5% of solid gold, compared to 0.5% for gold-plated jewelry, which makes them last much longer and safe for sensitive skin.
Gold Vermeil
Gold vermeil (pronounced 'ver-may') uses sterling silver as the base metal. It must be at least 10k and contain 2.5 microns of solid gold to be considered gold vermeil. We use 2.5 to 3 microns for our gold vermeil jewelry to ensure our gold vermeil jewelry lasts a long time.
Gold Plated
Gold-plated jewelry is made by quickly dipping or 'flash plating' a base metal (brass or copper) into a thin layer of gold, ranging from 0.1 - 0.5 microns. Although gold-plated jewelry is the most affordable option, we do not carry any gold-plated jewelry as it can last only a few weeks before tarnishing occurs.
Caring for your jewelry
Jewelry care varies based on what your jewelry is made with, including the metal and stone.
Gold-filled
Gold-filled jewelry is safe to wear in water, excluding hot tubs, swimming pools, and the ocean as the chemicals and salt can damage the jewelry. Please remove your jewelry before exercising, putting on lotions, makeup, and perfume.
To clean, use a jewelry polishing cloth and wipe away any dirt and chemicals on the jewelry, and safely store in a box or pouch to keep it dry. We do not recommend using ultrasonic cleaner on gold-filled jewelry, especially on chains.
Gold vermeil
Gold vermeil is ideal for people with sensitive skin who prefers sterling silver as the base metal. Our gold vermeil jewelry has 3 microns of thick solid gold plated over sterling silver, it's safe to wear in water (except ocean, bathtub, and swimming pools). If your gold vermeil jewelry comes in contact with water, pat it dry and store in a jewelry box or pouch to avoid moisture. Please remove your jewelry before exercising, putting on lotions, makeup, and perfume.
To clean, please use a jewelry polishing cloth and gently wipe away any dirt and chemicals.
Solid gold
Solid gold jewelry ranges between 9k and 24k, where the entire jewelry is cast in a mixture of pure gold and alloys. We use 9k in our solid gold jewelry to ensure durability and long-lasting wear. Our solid gold jewelry is created by our ethical factory that uses recycled gold, which significantly reduces environmental damage.
Solid gold is ideal for people with very sensitive skin, fresh piercings, and those who want a jewelry piece that lasts a lifetime.
To clean, use ultrasonic cleaner or soak your jewelry in a bowl of warm water with mild dish soap and give it a gentle scrub with a soft toothbrush. Rinse it thoroughly and pat it dry. Lastly, store it in a jewelry box or pouch.
Sterling Silver
We use recycled sterling silver free of nickels and other allegenic metals. Our sterling silver jewelry is plated with rhodium, which gives it a colour and shine resembling platinum, and makes it more durable and tarnish-resistant.
To care for your sterling silver jewelry, soak your jewelry in warm water for 5-10 minutes, and gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush. Rinse your jewelry with warm water and pat dry with a soft cloth. You can use a silver polishing cloth to buff the jewelry to restore its shine. Store your sterling silver jewelry in a dry, cool place to prevent tarnishing.
Freshwater pearls
All of our freshwater pearls are carefully hand-selected with love. We only source the highest quality pearls with a minimum of AAA grading. No pearls are exactly the same as they are grown naturally, which gives them the natural beauty of varying slightly in colour and shape.
To care for your pearl jewelry, gently wipe away any dirt with a jewelry polishing cloth. Avoid direct contact with chemicals found in perfume, lotions, and cosmetics on pearls as they are very delicate.
Store your pearl jewelry in a cool dry place, inside a jewelry box or pouch.
Gemstones
We use both synthetic and natural gemstones in our jewelry. Our natural gemstones are ethically sourced by our Responsible Jewelry Council certified suppliers.
Cubic Zirconia:
To clean your jewelry with CZ stones, gently wipe away dirt and chemicals with a jewelry polishing cloth.
Natural gemstones:
We recommend keeping natural gemstones such as opals and quartz away from water and chemicals as they are delicate and sensitive. Bumping or hitting them against hard surface can crack the stone, so please treat them gently.
To keep your stones clean and shiny, gently wipe away dirt with a jewelry polishing cloth or scrub them lightly with a soft-bristled brush, warm water, and mild soap.
